One Week On: UK Elections Results & What They Mean For Us

Last week all over the country the voters turned out to have their say in the various local elections. Candidates were being elected to all the various local councils and assemblies; they included the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Assembly, the London County Council and Mayoral Election, as well as the local council elections across the length and breadth of England.

The results are slightly mixed for both the large parties as well as the minority parties. But before we look at the nationwide picture and discuss what it means for us as a whole and how they might affect us come the next election in 2020, let us at first examine the results of the election here in Cardiff and then the rest of Wales.

#Wales2016: Here's What Candidates Said About The Issues That Matter To Young People - In Cardiff South & Penarth

We at Cardiff Youth Council (CYC) decided to question the Welsh Assembly candidates of Cardiff on issues raised by you, young people in Cardiff - ahead of 5th May's election.

Using these issues highlighted by young people, we devised a series of questions for each of Cardiff’s 28 Assembly Candidates representing 7 different parties, across four different constituencies, to record their responses in this Special 2016 Welsh Assembly Election Edition Shout-out.

Here are the responses for Cardiff South & Penarth.

CYC have worked with young people across the city to highlight the following priorities in 2016:

· A curriculum which prepares us for life

· High quality mental health services

· Tackling racism & religious discrimination

· The Living Wage for all

· A reduced voting age to 16

“In no more than 500 words, please explain how you intend to address these issues if elected.”

The hustings was organised by Children In Wales on the 13th of April. When I arrived (which was about 5 mins late), I had noticed this had a different feel to the previous hustings I had been to. The room was packed. It was only made worse by the organisers asking me to sit in a spare seat right at the front, despite others standing. A nice gesture but still embarrassing nonetheless as I awkwardly made my way through.

"The choice before human beings is not, as a rule, between good and evil but between two evils."

George Orwell wrote these words in 1941. At the time he was speaking of the fight against Nazism. He later went on to describe the choices: "You can let the Nazis rule the world: which is evil; or you can overthrow them by war, which is also evil."

Some might say that such is the same terrible choice faced by the people of Syria in the midst of their civil war. I made this choice because of Orwell's own involvement in the Spanish Civil War, which like the Syrian Civil War of today became notable for the passion and political division it inspired and for the many atrocities committed by both sides.

Review: American Idiot @ New Theatre

Who knew? Green Day?s frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong loves musicals. He even has a tattoo of Jesus Christ Superstar?s logo on his right arm.

As you may have guessed, yes, this is a musical based on Green Day?s seminal American Idiot album, which was released in 2004 with hits like Wake Me Up When September Ends, Holiday, and modern rock sing-along (or sing-alone) anthem Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

But, no, this show is not about Green Day. It is not, as some might assume, a story about their elevation to rock fame, or anything like that. It is about three young men?s despair and journey for meaning in a post-9/11 America. It is deep and meaningful.

2016 is a very important year for ERYICA (European Youth Information and Counselling Agency) and the European Youth Information sector: it is ERYICA's 30th birthday! ERYICA is an independent European organisation, composed of national youth information co-ordination bodies and networks, established on 17th April 1986 in Madrid.

17th April also happens to be the European Youth Information Day (EYID), and this year you have an opportunity to join and participate in the EYID campaign, under the slogan: YOUTH INFORMATION INSPIRES YOUth.

What do you have to do to participate?

You only have to answer the question: How did youth information inspire youth? Through a picture, video, text, poem - whatever you want and felt inspired by. Then share it on Facebook or Twitter using #eryica30 by 18th April 2016 (you can also send it to by email: secretariat@eryica.org).
