TheSprout has teamed up with the Cardiff Partnership for a series of interviews with the leaders of Cardiff's main institutions, and this week we interviewed the Principal of Cardiff and Vale College, Mike James. This is part 3, and you can read part 1 and part 2 here.

Lifelong learning

theSprout: How can we attract more adults to re-engage with education and improve their employment prospects?

MJ: I think we should provide to adults who have had limited or no opportunities who have the motivation to succeed. I think education should be free at source (so far as is reasonable). I think we should provide entry-level courses that are free at the point of access and engage those who haven?t got the standard Level 2 English and Math requirements.

What this means: Education should be free and available to everyone, as long as they have the motivation

Digital inclusion

theSprout: Digital inclusion has become essential to all of our lives. How are we making sure that people can make the switch to managing their lives in this digital world?

MJ: Most of our classes are online or blended. Most our students have so much technology at home ? iPads, smart phones and interactive TVs ? that we can?t then expect them to switch all that off when they get to college. When they go back into the world of work, they?ll be expected to have all of these digital skills so we?re trying to make our learning more technology-focused.

What this means: CAVC try to use technology whenever they can in classes. Whatever you use in your everyday life should be used at college.

Tackling poverty

theSprout: How can we best support the increasing numbers of families who are in work but also in poverty?

MJ: We all need to roll our sleeves up and get involved in those communities, those schools that need governance and support. We need to make sure that the skills are available to provide that opportunity of inward investment to companies to come out of London, out of Belgium, out of Frankfurt to come to Cardiff because it's a great place to live and work, the staff and students we employ are brilliant. We need to make sure that those companies that are in Wales are served and supported so that they still competitive and stay in Wales. That inward investment creates jobs, it creates tax revenue, and public sector services, and the community can keep moving forward.

What this means: We need to encourage business to come to Cardiff to invest in our community, so that everyone sees the benefits.

Enabling the most vulnerable to achieve their potential

theSprout: In Cardiff many vulnerable or older people can feel isolated from their community.? What can we do as a City to enable them to live independently and improve their quality of life?

MJ: We are absolutely and completely inclusive. Nobody is turned away, and we try to support everyone who comes to us and our offers are always demand-led. We also got our community-based programmes, which range from cookery to woodwork and pottery. We're 7% over subscribed for our full-time study grant - I refused to turn anybody away, and it only means an extra 1 or 2 pupils in a class. We don't discriminate, and we try to work with integrity and intellect to deliver the highest standards.

What this means: By making sure that everyone is fairly treated in education, CAVC can make sure that the whole community benefits.
