Y Fuwch Goch
There are a number of reasons why you should fill your boots with the homemade food lovingly prepared at Y Fuwch Goch.
That every meal on offer is a steal at £6 is an obvious draw, but when you hear the bilingual conversations between punters and staff and discover that the diner is an offshoot of Clwb Ifor Bach opposite, it's pretty much the only place to fuel up before a gig (they have those here as well).
Formerly Kaz Bar - which also served as a damn good live venue as part of last year's Swn festival - Y Fuwch Goch has been titled in tribute to its 18th century incarnation and literal translation, The Red Cow.
Local history stories and ancient maps of Cardiff adorn the walls, which make for some great casual reading en route to and from the toilets.
Plasma screens quietly show current sport, while a soundtrack of contemporary Welsh and international music allows for conversation around one of the ten or so farmhouse tables and cosy retreats.
Then there's the menu, with a straightforward tick-sheet and pay at the bar system. We went for the Welsh beef, leek and cheese burger with hand-cut fries, Brains beer battered onion rings and a salad garnish, and the lamb cawl with soda bread and cheese.
The burger was exactly like mama used to make: generously chunky with a consistency that only comes from quality beef. The onion rings should also get a mention for crispiness and aroma.
The cawl was also evidently homemade; thick, dark and piping hot, it was full of lamb and very filling when dunked with the soda bread and cheese.
We were way too full for one of their already legendary £3 cheesecakes, but if you've tried one please let us know how they are via a comment below.
The rumours (of rumours) of a hostel being built in Womanby Street and threatening any kind of interference with a certain beloved musical institution has been a call to arms enough thus far, but voting with your hard-earned when choosing where to eat cheaply has never been so cut and dried.
