Last summer I thought I’d give myself a task or challenge so that I wouldn’t get bored when there was nothing to do.

A couple of ideas came to mind but the one thing that I really wanted to do was learn Welsh. As a proud Welshman it was something I’d always wanted to be able to do and I also thought it would vastly improve my chances of getting a job.

So I went and bought myself a Teach Yourself Welsh CD and book and got to work. After two weeks later I had convinced myself it was too hard, I was too old to learn a new language and that trying to learn a something in my house meant too many distractions.

A year on and I still hope to one day learn my native language but I still don’t know my ‘hoffi’ from my ‘coffi’. What I really need is some sort of festival which promotes the Welsh language.

Well, luckily for me, between Friday 22nd and Friday 29th June Cardiff plays host to its very own Welsh Language Festival Tafwyl.

The aim of Tafwyl, which is in its 8th successful year, is to both promote the wide range of Welsh language activities held throughout the year in Cardiff and to raise the profile of the language in the capital.

The festival is called Tafwyl, as it's a combination of the words Taff and festival in Welsh, and will work in partnership with Cardiff Council to put on a festival bigger and better than previous years.

Tafwyl week will begin on Friday 22nd with a gig from Welsh artists Huw Chiswell and Gildas. Saturday will see the return of Tafwyl Fair, which will be held at Cardiff Castle for the very first time. The event will have a wide range of activities from cookery, comedy and literature workshops to stalls selling Welsh produce. There will also be live music from Wales’ leading rock, pop and folk artists, dance sessions, a sports arena and street entertainers.

For the week following the fair, there will be all kinds of exciting events happening in various locations around the city as part of Tafwyl.

This event seems great! I think it's really important for the Welsh language to be promoted as much as possible!

Got something to say?
