On Wednesday July 6th a team of young people met with their local PCSOs (Police Community Support Officers) to turn the table and question them.

The Fitzalan Alternative Curriculum truth team “All about Boys and Girls” have been running for the past nine months and have undertaken some hard work; organizing events for community members, receiving OCNs and interviewing PCSOs for the Truth About Youth newsletter. The young people felt it is important to get to know their PCSOs and find out how they really felt about young people they work with. They asked ten questions they had put together and the PCSOs were glad to answer them and share their experiences. After, the Truth Team served tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits to the PCSOs and some teachers while, having an informal chat.

PCSO Neil Crowley said “youth engagement is part of what we do and it’s a good way of breaking down barriers, this works better with small groups, like this one. The young people all listen well and the questions they asked were very good. It reminds you that when you see them on the street in gangs, they’re just young people at the end of the day.”

PCSO Laura Ropers expressed the importance of Truth Teams as “it does break down barriers and give them an opportunity to talk to us. It gives an opportunity to have a relationship with them and it’s really valuable.”

Marcus Winterman, from Cathays who is one of the young people part of the Truth Team expressed “it was really exciting and good to meet with the PCSOs, I liked talking with them.” Joshua Bodin from Grangetown, who is another Team member, also added “it was fun asking the PCSOs questions, we gave them a good impression of young people”.

I met my local PCSO for the first time last week and they gave me some cool freebies like a bell keyring to attach to my wallet, so that if someone nicks it from my handbag, I'll hear the jingling bells.
