The Swallow's Nest by Samantha Wainwright.
The bright light of the new day shone across the meadow, complimenting the fresh dew laid perfectly upon the grass. The swallow came through, flying gleefully through the peaceful meadow and back to her tree.
Landing gently back on the branch she had chosen, the swallow began carefully building her nest, with twigs and feathers. It took her all day, and as the sun rose and fell she never stopped work.
She was half way through before she got proud of her work. She began to think of all the possibilities a new nest would bring to her, “When I’m done with this nest,” She thought “I’ll have a male swallow with me in no time. He will bring smaller swallows to the nest for me and I’ll be the envy of all the swallows in the meadow”.
“My new baby swallows will work hard for their mother and build me a bigger nest for all my hard work. The bigger nest will then lead to more comfort and my loyal children will continue to bring me food and comforting items. I will never fear hawks again as my nest will be a safe coven of the hard work my children will put into it. I will not work again as my new male swallow will always catch the food for me. I will have endless possibilities of the great things a new nest will bring.”
She was almost done, getting happier by the minute of her new found nest when a great gust of wind flew through the meadow blowing her nest to the ground, breaking it and blowing it across the meadow.
She was heartbroken and all her dreams of the new nest were shattered.
Moral: Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.
