The first thing?you notice on entering The Promised Land is the Welsh rock 'n' roll soundtrack and decor.

As well as coming through the speakers it adorns the walls and?carries on the conversation of groups of friends enjoying an after-work bevvy or hearty bite to eat.

It is a good atmosphere. We like.

Not ones to shy away from the melee, we took a corner table under the watchful gaze of Manics Nicky, Sean and James?standing?poigniantly on Black Rock Sands next to their signatures.

The semi-bilingual menu is a funky, colourful brochure which explains that most of what you are about to enjoy is locally sourced, including smoked duck from the Black Mountian Smokery in Crickhowell and Gorwydd Caerphilly cheese from Ceredigion. It also features big-ups from, and snaps with the likes of Paul Weller and Mick Rock. ? ?

We shared a starter of soup of the day (£3.50), which by the way is ample as a main course with two generous wedges of fresh bread and butter.?

For main I went for the steak & ale pie and mash (£7) which was overflowing with tender beef in a rich meaty gravy and topped with a light crunchy pastry. The mash did a great job of absorbing the sauce.

My partner got stuck into the Caribbean chicken curry (£6.50) which was equally generous in cubes of chicken breast soaked in a range of colours and spices. The aroma of rum as it arrived deserves a mention, as does?our nice waitress who went out of her way to ensure all was tip-top.

Top tucker in a festival atmosphere sums up the dining experience here, so be sure to sign up to their mailing list for regular updates on gigs and?occurrences.?

The men with megaphones on Queen Street say only some of us are bound for the promised land. We suggest they take a well earned break and discover it just around the corner.?

Got something to say?
