The Pain Of A Lost Child: Chapter Nine

“Hey Annie wake up,” Rob shook her and then said more firmly “Annie Wake Up Now!”

Annie woke up to see Rob sitting next to her looking anxious, “What is it Rob, what’s wrong?”

“It’s your mum Annie sh-she had a fall, but she’s OK now, she’s in hospital OK? Do you want to go and see her cause I can look after Niko?”

“No I don’t want to go and see my mother! Why would I want to? She never came to see me when I was in labour with Niko. You were the only one there,” Annie said while crossing her arms over her chest. Then she scowled at him, “As far as I’m concerned death is welcome to have her because she never cared for me, even when I was at death's door when I w-was... 17 sh-she never c-came,” she managed to say while tears flooded her eyes and trickled down her cheeks. She then gave a heart-wrenching sob.

“Hey Annie it’s OK, honey I’m here for you,” Rob said and pulled her into his embrace trying to comfort her but as he held her, her cries became louder and so woke Niko who began to cry as well. Rob knew it could be hours to get him to sleep if Annie didn’t stop crying, so he pulled her on to his lap and pushed her head up, so he could capture her lips by showing her how much he loved her and hushing her sobs. Slowly she calmed and Niko quietened. As Rob pulled away Annie sniffled and so he pulled her against his chest and stroked her hair and back while whispering comforting and loving words to her. Rob held her close all through the night.

'Run! Gotta keep running or I’ll die! They keep shooting! They will kill, gotta warn them, “Annie COME TO US NOW WE NEED YOU!”'

“Never again! Why me? I should be here, not with you! I need to be here for my baby and my husband!”

“Ah the mortal you have fallen for, how sad that we shall have to kill him for impregnating one of us, and of course we shall have to slaughter the child as it is of mixed blood and is disgusting and a dishonour to our kind!”

“NO! NOT MY BABY, NOT ROBBIE, DON’T TOUCH THEM!!”

Rob awakened to Annie screaming at nothing and realised she was still sleeping. She was up and running, tears streaming down her face unchecked and not stopped.

“STAY AWAY FROM THEM!”

As soon as Rob saw where she was heading (to Niko’s room) he was off the bed in a flash and chasing after her. She was by the door when he managed to grab her tightly in his arms but he lost his balance and they tumbled to the floor. Annie was still screaming blue murder and struggling to break free of his embrace by hitting him hard on his arms.

“GET OFF ME,” she screamed at him “YOU CAN’T DO THIS TO THEM! THEY ARE INNOCENT IT IS ME WHO COULDN’T STAY AWAY FROM THE MORTAL! NOW SHOW SOME COMPASSION!”

“Well it’s your fault then Annie and so this blood shed shall be on your hands.”

“Annie! Annie wake up! Annie you’re having a nightmare and you’re going to wake Niko,” but Rob realised she must not have heard him because she was still screaming.

All Annie could hear was a male voice saying “Annie it’s no good fighting me. Annie you know they will do this whether you like it or not! It will be on your head. You will continue to relive this memory as a nightmare just as clearly as you see it now as you see the blood shed of Niko.”

And so she screamed, and screamed “NO, I WON’T LET YOU! NOW LET ME GO BEFORE I HURT YOU SO BADLY YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO STOP ME!”

“Go ahead Annie because it won’t help you and you know it.”

Annie let out a loud sob, that chilled Rob to the bone. It was tearing him at his heart to hear her voice sound so tortured. He was not surprised that when he took her back to bed that he had to pull away to place her in bed so she would be warm and cosy. She whimpered and then when he pulled her close she clung to him in her sleep as a wet leaf does to your face.

Next morning, while sipping on a hot cup of coffee and watching Annie sleep, Rob thought to himself 'I wonder what started that off and what the hell she was dreaming of? That must have been a real bad nightmare, but why was she trying to get to Niko? And why couldn’t she hear me try to wake her?'

Then Annie stirred and he knew she was waking up, he heard the gentle cries coming from Niko’s room notifying Rob that he was ready for his morning feed and to play with his mummy. So he went over to Annie and gently brushed her hair from her face and kissed her on the cheek murmuring to her that he was going to get Niko.
