  • A big black cock
  • Surrey 165-5 (20 overs) beat Glamorgan 148-8 (20 overs) by 17 runs
  • Glamorgan slumps to first home defeat
  • Surrey move above Glam in table
  • Kevin Pietersen only scores 1

Surrey inflicted the first home defeat of Glamorgan’s NatWest T20 campaign, with a 17 run victory on a sun-drenched Friday evening in a rowdy SWALEC Stadium.

Surrey started strongly with Hashim Amla top scoring with 55 but the fall of Jason Roy, Kevin Pietersen and Gary Wilson took the wind out their sails and they spluttered to a modest looking total of 165-5.

Positive things for Glamorgan in the first session were Hogan’s excellent snap catch off his own bowling to dismiss Roy and the sudden yet inevitable fall of Pietersen. Well-known for a having a bit of a problem with left-arm orthodox spin bowlers, Glamorgan immediately brought on the evergreen Dean Cosker, who’s a left-arm orthodox spin bowler, and Big KP was gone by Cosker’s second delivery, caught behind the stumps by Mark Wallace.

Rather less positive was the 19 runs gifted to Surrey in extras, which is a big error in the shortest form of the game. These came mainly from no-balls bowled by Darren Sammy and Graham Wagg. Wagg also dropped Amla when he was on 42, while Ben Wright dropped the big-hitting Kevin O'Brien (40 not out) when on 14.

These no-balls and dropped catches proved crucial as Glamorgan slumped to a 17 run defeat. Jim Allenby had a decent knock again with 52, but the fall of Jack Rudolph and Sammy for ducks summed it up. Set a gettable target they quickly fell behind the run rate and never recovered, shipping wickets until it was left to the spinners Andrew Salter and Cosker to do the impossible and hit 30 odd runs off the last over. Thomas Curran (3-20) and the most tattooed man in cricket Jade Dernbach (2-27) bowled well for the visitors.

Glamorgan have the chance to bounce back quickly, as their next home T20 game is on Wednesday (25th June) against Hampshire, which will be Sammy’s final game before returning to the Caribbean for their T20 competition.
