Summer Learning Festival

  • Worth every penny...

It’s always hard to know how to get involved with the career you want to pursue. Sometimes you just don’t know where to go or who to talk to. Well, don’t worry because help is on its way. I know that sounds cheesy but really, the help you need may well be coming to Cardiff this summer with The Summer Learning Festival.

Whether you want to be the next Van Gogh, the next star of Broadway, or indeed the next Spielberg, you are probably going to find something that will help you on the first step to achieving your dreams (again, quite cheesy, sorry). Even if you hate drama, despise music or dislike film studies there is more than likely going to be at least one course that will interest you.

TheSprout will be present at the festival, which begins on Monday 19th July and runs through to Friday 6th August, to offer you the chance to try your hand at over 100 different courses in almost everything from sport to digital production or even just general skills for life. It’s your choice what you do and there will be other organisations there as well as theSprout.

Chapter will be hosting lots of activities this summer including an interesting dance and theatre project called Deadhead. Even if this doesn’t sound like your thing they offer fun and useful courses in filmmaking, film journalism and printmaking.

Some courses are available in Welsh and will be hosted in different venues over the three weeks such as Chapter (as mentioned above) and the festival is available for years 7-10 in Cardiff LEA Schools. This is a great chance to explore possible future careers and actually have fun at the same time. Seems too good to be true doesn’t it? Well believe me it is true.

The best bit about the courses (apart from how fun and rewarding they are) is that they are absolutely free. Not only this but attending the course will earn you children university points and you will get to attend an awards evening to acknowledge your achievement. So fill out and return the enrolment form by Friday 2nd July because places will fill up fast.

There is a hotline you can ring if you need any information. Just call 02920 872704 if you need any guidance. Alternatively you can visit the website to see what courses are still available. Courses are taking place in loads of schools as well as in many other public buildings like fire stations and even in dance studios and at Maindy Barracks.

I know how boring brochures and enrolment forms can be and it can seem like a unnecessary hassle at times but this is really worth it. Many of you will be keen contributors to theSprout and they along with a number of other organisations are offering you the chance to discover potential career paths.

Nothing has to be decided yet; it’s just a fun and useful tool to help you begin your journey on the road to a future career. Oh, and if you come all day please bring your own food.

Running theSprout journalism course for this was one of the highlights of my time as Sprout editor! I highly recommend it, really good fun and you will be a published web journalist by the end! Some from last year now write regularly and picked up awards at theSprout awards this year (including Sambow!). A few even came on the CLIC planning residential last month!

Got something to say?
