10 Things To Do In Your Fresher Year

1. Join a sports team or society. This is a great way to meet new people and make a whole new group of friends. From extreme puddle jumping to ballroom dancing there really is something for everyone of any ability to get involved with. The social side to these clubs is almost as good as the activities themselves. Beware of initiations!

2. Learn to love pasta. It is a staple student food and can conjure various meals. Pasta bakes are particularly good as they will last for a few days ? which therefore means less cooking.

3. Go to a gig at your union. They are much more intimate than bigger gigs and therefore you can get closer to your favourite bands. Tickets are usually cheaper than bigger events. Get in touch with your student union for details of the bands that are playing.

4. Visit your nearest historic or modern landmark. Examples include Cardiff Castle and Cardiff Bay. Most of you will be living in a new city so go and explore your surroundings. Bring a picnic and add some culture to your university adventure.

5. Go on a bar crawl. Whether it is an organised crawl or your own, this is one thing which must be done at university- just make sure you don’t actually end up crawling home.

6. Dress up on a night out. It has to be done ? ideas of themes include Smurfs, army, animals, Disney characters, 80s fame, pub golf and Hawaiian. Don’t be afraid to go all out on your costumes.

7. Cook a house/flat meal. Cooking a meal together means less work for you and also provides some quality time to spend with your flatmates. A very easy bonding experience.

8. Visit ‘Chippy Lane. Better known as Caroline Street, and where lovebirds Gavin Henson and Charlotte Church apparently met, so you could be lucky (the food is also pretty good after a night out).

9. Decorate your room. Check out the poster sales at your union which have a really good selection at hard to beat prices.

10. Find the uni library (and befriend the librarians). Essential if you wish to write some decent essays!
