Hello fellow Sprouters, and welcome to another SproutNews. Now, before I begin, I would like to apologise for the delay in getting this article online, but unfortunately life and GCSE option choices have been in the way.

But no matter, it is here now. On with the News:

In the Headlines today:

  • US Islamic State hostage, Kayla Mueller has been killed by the radical party.
  • An TransAsia ATR-72 aircraft has plunged into a river in Taiwan, after a possible engine failure.

First, US Islamic State hostage, Kayla Mueller has been killed by the terrorists. Ms Mueller, aged 26, was abducted whlist working in Syria. Her family said that they were "heartbroken" to hear the news of her death. Whilst paying tribute to her, US President, Barack Obama said, "She represents what is best about America." IS claimed that she was killed by a Jordanian airstrike, without providing any solid evidence. Jordan denied that Ms Mueller had been killed by air-strikes, launched after the burning alive of captured Jordanian Pilot, Moaz al-Kasasbeh. Ms Mueller had sent a letter to her family, whilst she was in captivity, saying that she had been treated with "utmost respect and kindness." Sadly, this is yet another hostage that has been brutally killed by Islamic State.
Now, a TransAsia ATR-72 passenger aircraft has plunged into a river in Taiwan, after suffering a possible engine failure. The plane was carrying mostly Chinese tourists, and 40 out of the 58 people on-board - including the three pilots - have been confirmed as dead. Of the 18 people who survived, one of them was a 2-year-old boy. The plane struck a taxi on it's terrifying plunge, but, miraculously, no-one was killed in the car. Last year seemed to be a very bad year for passenger aviation. Four major incidents occurred: the disappearance of Malaysian Airways flight MH370 in March [SproutNews article here]; the tragic incident of another Malaysian airways flight - this time, MH17 - being shot down over ukraine by a ground to air missile; the horrific incident, at the very end of last year, with AirAsia flight QZ8501, in which the aircraft smashed into the ocean after doing a nearly vertical climb - killing everyone on-board; and the incident of Virgin Atlantic flight VS43, which lost hydraulic power in a section of the aircraft and had to make an emergency landing at Gatwick Airport, in London. All of these incidents pose the worrying question, is flying getting more dangerous? No, is the answer. In-fact, statistically-speaking, flying has never been safer.
That's all for today folks, see you next time!
