The cinematic chasm left by the sudden departure of the Cardiff Screen Festival back in 2006 left local film buffs bereft of suitable chin-stroking material.

While Chapter continued to showcase the best in international cinema, an annual event of any notable size simply ceased to be.

Fair play to the organisers of last week's Soundtrack Festival, then, in putting together a four-day shindig to be proud of.

Cannes? Who are ya?

Opening on Wednesday with a masterclass (read Q&A) with Danny Boyle (Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, The Beach, Sunshine), the festival meant business, and backed it up with a few nearly-world premieres starting with Boyle's new vehicle, Slumdog Millionaire - the story of a young man who wins the Indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, but has no interest in money.

Thursday saw DJ and producer, David Holmes in the hot seat, followed by a screening of Hunger, a harrowing account of the IRA hunger strikes that took place at The Maze prison in the early eighties.

Holmes co-scored the film, which not so much shows what happened as grabs you by the hair and rubs your nose in it.
