Cardiff Roller Collective (CRoC) is one of the clubs in Wales bringing roller sports to the local Cardiff area. CRoC offers roller derby, recreational and artistic skating, beginner skate sessions and roller hockey. No matter how old or young you are there’s roller skating for everyone.

You may not have heard of roller derby but it is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and it’s increasing in popularity throughout Wales.

Roller derby is an American-invented contact sport where two teams skate in formation around an oval track. Each team has a designated points scorer, called a 'jammer', who scores a point for each member of the opposite team they pass. Four 'blockers' on each team use their bodies to move opposition players and to protect their jammer.

Although derby players have to be tough and gutsy as the sport is full contact they also like to show their fun side by wearing colourful, flirtatious outfits. Every skater expresses their personality through an alter ego name, which is usually a play on words e.g. Pixie Block, Jiggly Ruff and Grazed Anatomy.

Roller derby is not for the fainthearted as it can be dangerous. Although players are required to wear protective pads and helmets, injuries do happen. Local games have been known to draw in crowds of hundreds, with spectators sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for high impact collisions and fancy footwork.

Due to the nature of the sport roller derby is for 18s and over, however the young’uns needn’t miss out on the skating fun. CRoC established its recreational and artistic skating group so that children and families could also get involved with roller sports in Cardiff.

Artistic skating is performed on quad figure skates, and incorporates elegant dance moves with tricks and fancy costumes, much like figure ice-skating you may have seen on TV.

CRoC have a qualified figure skating coach who will help you learn the skills you need to achieve skating grades and to compete against other teams around the UK.
