As a student in Cardiff, I’m all too familiar with the chain pubs and bars that litter St. Mary Street and Greyfriars Road, such as Wetherspoon, Varsity and Walkabout.?
But it’s one unique pub with no such brand that faces a bleak future, as plans have been put in place to demolish The Vulcan, a popular drinking site for many over the years.
The Vulcan, which is situated on Adam Street opposite the University Of Glamorgan’s ATRiuM building, is one of Cardiff’s oldest pubs and visitors are furious that plans are in place to demolish the building so a car park and flats can be built.
Regulars are not giving up yet though, and a campaign has been launched in the hope of saving the pub which has been running on its current site since 1853.
Already over 3000 people have signed the petition to save The Vulcan and there are almost 1500 members on the Facebook group GOD HAVE MERCY?SAVE THE VULCAN.
Numerous famous people have also pledged their support, including Jenny Randerson AM, John Inverdale, Huw Stephens and many more.
Rachel Thomas is one of the leading people behind the campaign, and she is desperate to see it saved: "The pub is one of the only surviving buildings from the Newtown area of Cardiff, and as such must be saved. Cardiff's docks are what built Cardiff into the city it is today, and without that industry Cardiff would not be what it is.
"We cannot let developers bulldoze our heritage, wiping important parts of social, cultural and industrial history off the map entirely. If the pub is demolished, it's gone forever. It must be left standing for future generations to enjoy - not just a pint and a packet of pork scratchings, but for people to enjoy experiencing the real character the Vulcan has".
A public meeting will be held to discuss the latest developments of the campaign on Thursday 29 January at 7pm in The ATRiuM. The meeting is for anyone to attend and will be used to evaluate where the campaign will go from here.?
As a student at the Atrium I have been in The Vulcan and have always found it a nice change. The Vulcan has character, not something that can be said for a lot of pubs in the Welsh capital.
You can pledge your support by attending the meeting, signing the petition and joining the Facebook group, all of which have links above. Do your bit to save a big part of Cardiff’s heritage.
