Is it a tea cosy? Is it Rhodri's new jumper? Wrong on both counts! It is actually, or so the organisers claim, the largest bobble hat in the world. Well probably... if the Guinness Book of Records are reading this can they send someone down! It is certainly is the largest bobble hat in Chapter Arts Centre, Canton which is where Cardiff AM and former First Minster Rhodri Morgan came across it on Monday.

It was made by school children from Lansdowne Primary School together with folks from the community organisation Canton Carbon Cutters, a residents group aiming to cut the carbon footprint of Canton and show the whole of Cardiff you can save money doing it.

When Rhodri got over the shock of seeing a giant hat in the entrance to one of his favourite hangouts he said: "I think this is a brilliant community initiative to remind householders in Canton that heat loss occurs through poorly insulated roof space. Every house should have a bobble hat equivalent!"

Rhodri also showed he is a man of action as well as words by signing up to get his own house insulted. The people behind Canton Carbon Cutters have negotiated a special deal with a local insulation company who can insulate your roof and/or cavity walls for just £99 each (for an average 3 bed terraced house). Also many people will be eligible for free insulation e.g. if you are on benefits, even if you are renting.

The monster sized bobble hat is part of a campaign which says ‘Keep Your Hat on Canton’ and the Cutters are putting on a fun day at the Canton Uniting Church from 10:00 - 13:00 on Saturday (February 6th) where an energy doctor will be on hand to give you a personal prescription for your energy saving needs. Of course the giant bobble hat that Rhodri took such a shine to will be at the fun day on Saturday and everyone is welcome whether they want to learn about cutting carbon, saving energy or simply shelling out less cash on their heating bills - and there is nothing woolly about that!

Canton Carbon Cutters is a purely voluntary group and always welcomes new members. Please email energyvolunteers@googlemail.com for more details, or click here for information on other environmental groups operating in Cardiff.
