Review: Flown - Pirates Of The Carabina @ Edinburgh Fringe
One of the many Edinburgh Festival Fringe events I attended during my time up there with the NoFit State Youth Circus Group was the Pirates of the Carabina's performance of Flown.
During the course of the week all I had was NoFit youth members banging on about this show and how amazing it looked, so I was expecting a lot and to be quite honest I didn't get a lot.
Don't get me wrong there were some incredible acts using Chinese Pole and Aerial Hoop and even a Hula Hoop-off. Also mixed in were some immensely comedic moments and creative costume designs, including two that were foils to each other and emphasised the contrast between the two characters wearing said costumes (I appreciated that vastly), but I just couldn't get into it.
The acts were very disjointed, despite attempts to fill in intervals with apparent stand-up comedy from each member of the cast and the music didn't exactly make up for it either. One thing I have learnt while watching various acts during my time here is that music is very much everything. There was far too much chaos and not much plot or direction from both the music and the performance on the whole.
But nevertheless I did admire the performers skill and professionalism when parts went wrong. The only fault I saw in this performance was down to the management and direction not from the performers and musicians themselves.
