One of the many Edinburgh Festival Fringe events I attended during my time up there with the NoFit State Youth Circus Group was the City of the Dead Haunted Graveyard Tour. This was performed by the Black Hart Entertainment group through the haunts and hidden hideaways of Edinburgh's long and hideous past.

Oh, the horror!

According to its website, "City of the Dead has been named Britain’s Best Ghost Walk (Yahoo! Travel, Scare.com, Scaretoursuk.com). It was also named Edinburgh's Best Ghost Tour (Lonely Planet) and is the only Scottish attraction ever to be shortlisted three times for the prestigious Screamie Award."

After doing the tour for myself I'd have to agree.

Each tale was more gripping and fascinating than the last. We began in a dark, damp and dreary vault in the underbelly of the city where we were told of tales of witch trials, abduction, torture, fire and murder most foul; we started on a standard that wasn't ghouling about. The tour also requires quite a bit of walking to get to haunt to haunt, so incidentally it's not a bad way to explore layer upon layer of the city's twisting, towering and incredible architecture. The bruises I gained from falling over from not looking where I was going as the city and stories drew me in, is proof enough of how perplexing this city and it's overly gruesome history is.

This tour is the perfect combination of comedy, in-depth history, wonderful costumes, strong storytelling and that gore, blood and guts we all secretly crave. If you're the type who like me spends most of their free time watching Horrible History or documentaries on the paranormal and has a pretty bleak sense of humour then there's no chance in Hell you wouldn't enjoy this tour.

The tour is around an hour-and-a-half-long and tourists should beware; you're in for a scare!
