On Saturday 30th July 2011, Deadlights took to the stage at St. David’s Hall as part of a show set up by MusicMix and Grassroots. I decided to pop along and have a listen to their music.

The band consisted of three members, all ex-Whitchurch High School pupils, Will on lead vocals and guitar, Daniel on bass and James on drums.

When I got there I was welcomed by their first song Running Round in Circles. This song was written by all three members of the band and is one of their original songs. I thought it was very entertaining and an enjoyable listen.

Then they performed a Beatles song, Come Together and again I must say I really enjoyed this song what with its catchy drums and loud guitar. They then played some more self-penned songs, This Time and Buried Alive before a cover of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s Life by the Drop.

Even though there weren’t that many people in the audience, the band still played with great energy and all their heart. Those that did turn up seemed to enjoy themselves too.

Deadlights then covered The Rolling Stones’ Jumping Jack Flash. This again was a lovely and enjoyable song to listen to by these young guys. To finish the gig they ended with two more of their own songs; Toe to Toe and Always Something.

I really enjoyed listening to Toe to Toe. I found the song very enticing. I enjoyed listening to the vocals sung by Will, who I think is very brave, as well as the other members, for coming up on stage and singing.

After the end of the gig I managed to steal some time from Daniel who spoke for the band. Whilst asking him some questions, I found out that the band has been together since October 2010, which is quite a short time considering the excellent performance they gave. They have only played seven gigs in total and that they will be playing the Under Construction Festival at Maindy Stadium on the Saturday 20th August.

It’s hard to imagine after seeing their amazing performance that all the members are really nervous before they go on stage. Now I have to point out that they really don’t seem at all fazed whilst on stage - but maybe the nerves and worrying about what people may think of their music helps them to perform better?

When I asked them about their musical abilities I wasn’t surprised when they said they can all play other instruments. I can’t name them all as we’d probably be here all day so let’s just say that they are all multi-instrumental people.

All in all I really enjoyed seeing Deadlights play live and that it was a very memorable performance.
