Harry lay spread out on the family settee.
His eyes were heavy after flying home from Switzerland.
Slowly, his eyes closed and he began to snore lightly.
Alice stepped through the door, struggling with the shopping bags. As soon as she walked through the doorway and spotted her husband snoring on the settee, she dropped the bags and ran to him.
Harry jolted awake, but knew almost instantly from the soft, warm scent of Alice's perfume that it was his wife.
"Oh, Harry! I've missed you so much!" she exclaimed.
"Hi, Al! I've missed you too!" Harry replied.
"Let me tell you, mister, looking after two girls alone is not easy!" Alice said with a grin.
"I'm sorry - you know how important that trip was."
"Don't worry, I was just teasing. So, how'd it go? Did they like your product?"
Alice had been hoping for a long while that Harry's job would pick up. When he came up with the idea of the novelty lamps, she jumped at the chance and told him to go through with it. Harry's idea took him to Switzerland to see a company called Aztec Designs - a firm that sold quirky but popular gifts, furniture and ornaments.
"Well, the manager, Derek, invited me to a dinner to discuss the idea, and, well, he loved it! He took my example and told me he would email me to tell me what happens next."
"Honey, that's brilliant! I'm so happy for you!" Alice beamed, kissing Harry on the cheek.
"I'll just make us some tea, eh?"
While Alice was in the kitchen, Harry pulled out Alice's gift he had brought from Switzerland. It gleamed in the sunlight streaming through the windows.
Alice returned after a couple of minutes with two steaming mugs of tea in her hands.
"Al, I got you a present! I got the girls presents too - Jo got a white-gold necklace and I got Amy a little silver statue thingy of a dragon."
"Thanks! Go on then, lets see it!"
Harry handed Alice a small, gold, heart-shaped locket on a delicate gold chain. Alice opened it, and found inside a black and white photo of their wedding day.
"Harry, it's... beautiful!"
"Well, it's for you, so, maybe you could wear it out tonight."
"Why? Where are we going?"
"I was thinking, because the thing in Switzerland went well, we could all go out for dinner. I haven't told the girls how it went. Jo did ask, but I just told her it went okay. I'll make the announcement then."
"Sounds great. I'll just pop upstairs and tell the girlies to get changed into something nice. Thank you, honey."
Alice stood up, and kissed Harry on the cheek. She then trotted upstairs to get changed.
Harry went to unpack the seemingly forgotten shopping bags.
