The Chapter Arts Centre looks set for a major redevelopment. An invitation to be part of a £6m transformation of the Centre in Cardiff has today been announced, with architects across the UK being asked to submit ideas for the regeneration and expansion of the venue.

The project follows a doubling of visitors to the former Canton High School building since 2009, when Ash Sakula Architects completed a £3.8 million revamp.

This time around, the 44 year-old Chapter has teamed up with three of its resident companies Earthfall, Ffotogallery and Theatr Iolo, and academic partner Cardiff University, to create a new consortium known as the Chapter Capital Alliance that will steer the expansion.

With funding committed from the Arts Council of Wales for this initial feasibility phase, potential options include the creation of new galleries, cinemas, performance and rehearsal studios, learning spaces and a digital hub. Opportunities for new retail spaces are also to be investigated alongside the refurbishment of existing spaces.

The winning team will develop plans up to RIBA Stage 2 as part of a feasibility study.

The deadline for registration is the 21 April and submissions must be completed by 1 May.

Full public consultation will take place later in the year as we invite our users and local residents to feed into and comment on the plans.

Sub-Ed’s note: If anyone has any comments they wish to add to the consultation, feel free to use the space below and we’ll make sure they’re passed on. Thanks.

This is so exciting! I am sure it will be great for Chapter and for Wales more widely!
