Poem: The Journey

  • Sunset and bus boooooooooom

"£1.50 please" I stroll on and take a seat,
rest my head against the window,
the steady vibration of the engine silences my thoughts,
silencing the demons in this one man show.

Some near incomprehensible feelings leave me alone at last,
I can rest now, relax in a sombre state,
I hope there's a traffic jam today, this journey always goes too fast.

The bus halts. A pair of old ladies get on,
I don't open my eyes but their voices paint their images within my head,
plump elderly ladies I think, the ones with white hair,
they seemed the age when you'd hear in mid conversation, "Hey Muriel, Arthur's dead".

A few more characters boarded the bus,
like the vibrations their voices seemed to fight my mind's poison,
helped as well by the humming of the bus,
and the beauty of the sun's setting horizon.

The clouds burned reds and pinks, the beauty of a setting sun,
a sea of colour, the beauty in all it's entirety,
my mind fought back, straight into action,
maybe the momentary heaven is all that's meant for me.

My short lived absence is now at an end.
Time to go home Jim, you can no longer wait,
back to your home, back to your hell and everything you hate,
back to the mind games, your depression, your fate.

A few people can help me when I'm like this,
it's a sorry state of affairs but I wont let them in,
they're my problems I told myself, my demons.
I owe it to myself not to let them win.

It may not be the same for someone who reads this.
You should seek help if you ever feel like this,
your friends, they'll help you, just let them in,
but I'll never talk about things, my greatest sin.

Now the journey has come to an end and so must this,
I'm at my door now,
I've reached my destination,
I've reached the home of my solitude and degradation.
