Photographs:

I’ve been looking through a box of old photographs.
You know, the ones hidden in the back of a closet,
Just like the skeletons you keep there,
Knowing deep down they’re still there,
Never knowing for sure how long you keep them
Or even if you care that you still have them.

But in that box, I found you, again.
One of my oldest friends, if I can call you that.
We met so long ago now that I can’t remember where it was
Or what I was doing, but I remember this:
Your eyes glowed like the stars that shine above us every night,
The ones that we made wishes on so long ago,
The ones that group together in clusters making pictures.
A picture of.

Just like us, those photographs become worn and frail.
Over time, I guess that just happens.

So, let’s put the boxes back into the closet,
Because we’re ruining too much of a good thing,
Because we’re making the specialties less special.
Let’s sleep on it.

And while I sleep, I’ll imagine what I saw in the photographs.
Your eyes glowing like the sun above the clouds every summer –
Illuminating the imagery of the clouds that look like pictures.
A picture of.

A picture of.
A picture of Cupid shooting an arrow through my chest.
Yes, just one.
Because it didn’t take much for me to fall for you, graze my knee
And ask you to kiss me better.
But even the smallest cut still scars.

I learnt that when you left.

Like the stars, you went away
And I can’t bring myself to look at them whenever they happen to show up,
Regardless of their beauty.
I can’t seem to make a wish anymore because every time I do,
Because every time I do, it never comes true.

And I’ve had my hopes up too many times to put my heart on the line
For one more wish.

So let’s put the boxes back into the closet,
Because we’re ruining too much of a good thing,
Because we’re making the specialities less special.
So, let’s let put the boxes back.

Indeed, there should be a couple more going up this week. It's nice to see some poetry back on the site, it's been a while! Any readers out there got some poems they wrote in school or in their spare time, feel free to share them here on theSprout.

I really liked this! You really captured the emotions that photos can trigger and the very essence of life. I particularly liked the line: 'our eyes glowed like the stars that shine above us every night'. What a beautiful image. Thanks for sharing :)
