Slots are still available for singing auditions that are just around the corner in Cardiff!

Open Mic UK is the UK’s largest national music competition for singers and solo artists, and with over 9,000 unsigned acts entering last year, this year’s competition is set to be the biggest yet! Open Mic UK will be searching for Wales’s best singers, singer-songwriters, rappers and vocalists to be the next big thing when auditions come to the The Coal Exchange on Sunday 9th September.

Think you could be the next chart-topping vocal sensation? The Open Mic UK competition boasts some incredible success stories, including teen-songstress Birdy. Previous Open Mic UK winner Birdy’s debut album has been a massive hit across Europe achieving number one status in both Holland and Belgium and hitting the Top 20 in the UK, and she has very recently hit the number one spot in France with her stunning rendition of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love.

Birdy recently reminisced about the experience of playing in front of a thousand people at the Open Mic UK Grand Final as “such a cool experience” to Radio One. She explained that it showed her what she wanted to do when she was still very young. Her musical career began when she went up against 9,000 hopeful artists in Open Mic UK. Birdy swept through the auditions into the regional and area finals before her eventual win at the National Grand Final singing her own song ‘So Be Free’.

After winning Open Mic UK, Birdy recorded her album with Gareth Henderson in River Studios which resulted in her being offered a publishing contract with Good Soldier Songs Ltd, run by Christian Tattersfield, chairman of Warner Bros. Tattersfield was previously responsible for signing artists such as David Gray. Open Mic UK winner Birdy subsequently got signed to Warner.

The competition travels across the country every year searching for the next big star. It's open to all genres, so whether you’re into RnB, Rap, Acoustic, Pop or Classical – Open Mic UK has it all! Acts can perform either covers or original material and they’ll be invited to a live audition in front of the judging panel.

Chris Grayston, MD of Open Mic UK says, “Birdy has been a great example of the springboard Open Mic UK offers. She had an unbelievable talent and it’s since been channelled in the right direction and she’s achieving great things. The competition is about to start and we’re looking for someone who can be a global success in the same way Birdy has. If you’ve got the talent then why not audition in Cardiff.”

Another success story of Open Mic UK’s is pop-sensation and rising star Hatty Keane. Since winning her age category last year, Hatty Keane has been signed to BGM music, toured the UK extensively, and has supported big names such as Ed Sheeran, Wretch 32, Tinchy Stryder and Zane Lowe! She is currently working towards the release of her debut album, and will be heading to Russia in the summer to support Pitbull!

The question on everyone’s lips is who will follow in Birdy and Hatty Keane’s footsteps in this year’s Open Mic UK competition which starts in August? Acts who make it past their first audition will go through to the live showcases at some of the UK’s most prestigious venues including Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Sheffield City Hall, Birmingham’s LG Arena and Portsmouth Guildhall, following in the footsteps of famous acts such as The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Katy Perry. These fantastic venues all lead up to acts playing the Grand Final at the UK’s most recognised live music venue, The O2 in London.
