young carer is someone aged 18 or under who helps look after a relative who has a condition, such as a disability, illness, mental health condition, or a drug or alcohol problem.

After months of researching, planning and designing, the young carers from the YMCA Cardiff project are proud to announce that their recipe book app will be launched very soon.

The app, produced by young carers, will contain simple cheap recipes to help other young carers to cook meals at home.

The young carers’ group first produced a cookbook with the help of the Money for Life Challenge, which was a national competition that provided £500 grants for teams of 16 to 24 year olds to run a project to improve money management skills in their communities. This cookbook proved to be very successful and they managed to get to the Wales National Final!

They then had the opportunity to apply for the legacy grant to continue the cookbook success – which is when they decided they wanted to produce an app open to all.

However, apps do cost a lot of money, but with the help of a small local organisation, their idea has come true.

The app is currently in its last stages of design, but we can reveal the app name will be ‘Starter Chef’. Its exact launch date will be announced soon - theSprout will keep you updated.

This has been a fantastic journey for all involved. The group have not only learnt about coding and app design, but have also learnt the importance of planning and research.

The YMCA recently launched another project for young carers called ‘Time 4 Mewhere they run activities to give young carers a chance to meet other young carers and have some fun away from their caring responsibilities.

This is for young carers aged between 7-18 years old in Cardiff and now also the Vale of Glamorgan. For more information, visit the Sprout’s information page here.
