My Own Personal Devil: Part Five

"So... forgive a stupid question, but why are you so badly thought of on Earth?"

"There was no physical war, but there was a propaganda war. And God is still the one with influence over his own creations. It was His Bible, His church that set out to control populations, even though I tried to have my say in the Books..."

"The Books? How?" I interrupted.

"The Bible for example. Nowhere were my lands called 'Hell' in the original, or even the translated version. Chora is its name in the Ancient Greek Bible, and I named it this to represent open space; malleable by its inhabitants. But, perhaps inevitably, through time it came to gather negative connotations. Its meaning evolved from openness to abyss, the pit, and now Hell. And I have come to be portrayed as the serpent, the dragon, even this red fool with horns." He smiled bitterly. "It would amuse me if there were not souls at stake."

We stood across from each other, as he watched this information seep into my soul. It should have been unbelievable, but now I was a clear, glassy pond, and his words had no more difficulty penetrating me than would a pebble have dropping through the cold, perfect surface.

"And so the time comes. I must leave, and you must make your decision." Lucifer turned to make for the door, pausing to gaze regretfully at the naked corpse which lay on the dusty floorboards, the pools of blood from various cuts now dried black. "There are still many parts to Humanity I do not understand." He said quietly. He waved a helpless hand at the crude pentagram and the chalk runes which encircled the waxen body. "Goodbye." One last thing occurred to me as his hand alighted on the door handle.

"Wait. You said that, whichever I chose, once I got there I would be allowed to ask any questions. About anything?" He nodded. "But will the answers differ depending on where I choose?" He smiled.

"You are already asking the right questions. I will see you soon." With a last glance of his black star eyes he opened the door.
