On Friday 17th February, a performance group from Llanover Hall Youth Arts Centre appeared on Britain’s Got Talent in Birmingham.

Led by Llanover Theatre Director Stuart H. Bawler and Centre Manager Laura Williams a group of 5 young people aged 18 – 22 appeared in front of judges Simon Cowell, David Walliams, Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden. Also amazed by the group’s anarchic performance were Ant and Dec, ITV1’s TV cameras and a very enthusiastic audience of 2,200 people!

The group is called HUMMADRUZ and their performance was an Ultra-Violet Spectacle in the form of an insane Punk Insect Band, playing a unique version of Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love. The performance was a last-minute addition to the programme as the group missed the open audition in Cardiff because they were already committed to performing in Llanover Hall’s Youth Fashion Extravaganza that same day.

However, the Producers of Britain’s Got Talent saw the group’s YouTube video, fell in love with it and worked very hard to fit them into an edition of the programme.

So what did the judges think? David and Alesha gave a resounding yes but Amanda and Simon said no which was received by boos from the audience! So, although the group are now out of the competition, their determination to perform to enthusiastic audiences has been sharpened, especially as the group has also just received a grant from the British Council Youth in Action programme to produce bigger performances and take them on tour to theatres and festivals in Summer 2013.

HUMMADRUZ is the performing off-shoot of Llanover’s Youth Theatre and Circus class on Tuesdays, 7-9pm. Anyone aged 14-25 can join the class if they have the commitment to take part in regular rehearsals and performances. Classes cost £3 per week and annual membership of Llanover Hall is £19 for young people.

And keep your eyes peeled for at least a clip in the Birmingham Heat of Britain’s Got Talent!
