LGBT History Month: What Is It?
LGBT History Month is a month long celebration which looks at and celebrates the achievements of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. LGBT History Month is celebrated every February and in Cardiff this will be the fourth year of celebration. There is now even LGBT History Month Cymru which is organised by the LGBT Excellence Centre.
The first LGBT History Month in Britain was launched in 2005 (in America it had been launched in 1994), LGBT History Month Scotland followed in 2007/8 and LGBT History Month Cymru in 2011.
2011 was a milestone in Welsh history, when a section of its community (around 10% of Welsh people are LGBT) were finally recognised for its valuable contributions and the initiative saw a number of events, workshops, and conferences taking place.
For the last three years there have been many events in Cardiff and Cardiff County Council hosted the All-Wales LGBT History Month Education Conference which highlighted the work of young people and professionals (Youth Workers, Teachers etc) who are fighting for equality in all our schools and youth centres.
As it is LGBT History Month you will notice that there will be more articles on theSprout around the LGBT identity and community.
So our challenge for you if you choose to accept it is to write an article, story, poem to show your support for equality for LGBT people.
