LGBT Conference: My Experience
Recently I was lucky enough to be invited, as part of Cardiff High’s Anti-Homophobia group, to attend the LGBT Youth Conference 2011, held by Cardiff County Council Schools & Lifelong Learning department.
It was an invitation we couldn’t wait to accept and it sparked a series of regular meetings where we brainstormed ideas for what to do in our school’s half-hour slot. To show what our school has been working on recently we decided to start by performing the play (True Colours) that we had previously performed in various assemblies, followed by speeches from our chairperson and vice-chairperson. We have also been working on lesson plans on the subject of homophobia, to be used in one of our school’s PSE days, and so we also decided to run a workshop session showing our Geography lesson plan, and a drop-in art table where we would all work together to make two posters (one positive, one negative) out of newspaper and magazine cuttings.
The day of the conference finally arrived and we were amongst the first few people to take to the stage. Everything went really well, laughter in all the right places and all that, not that I can take much of the credit for that as I was acting the part of ‘Nameless easy-going teenager’, so well done everyone else especially Alex (who sang) and Jon (who did a speech), you guys were amazing!
In the first workshop session I went to theSprout workshop which was really good fun as we got a chance to make our own video promoting gender equality. Next was a lunchtime spent badgering people into visiting our art table, then more speeches and a final drama workshop, where we all worked together to create a character by taking in turns to answer a question about them, before clearing up the mess around our art table and packing up ready to go home.
Overall it was a brilliant day, I met some amazing and really inspirational people and I can’t wait until next year! We’ve already started planning some pretty cool stuff, so if you want to get involved in anything, or saw us at the conference and want to contact us, the email address is chsantihomophobia@gmail.com.
Finally, all that is left for me to say is thank you to all the organisers for such a thought-provoking and inspirational day!

Good to meet you at the conference, and your play really added to the day. Conferences can sometimes be long and tiring but this one was fun and entertaining! Thanks for making me laugh!
