Kylie Minogue, My Mother and I

The day has arrived where I have fully accepted that I am becoming my mother.

At more of an alarming rate than I deem appropriate.

Maybe it is the fact that I am now well into my second year at university and living away from her, but it doesn’t make it any less scary!

When I was little I remember my Mum getting a little wall hanging that she put up in the kitchen, it said ‘mirror mirror on the wall, I am my Mother after all.’ It seems those words are catching up with me!

As well as looking physically like my Mother - excluding my Dad's chromosomes which gave me his face and black curly hair, I, being 5' 1" and her at 5' 2", having exactly the same feet, same size tiny hands (which according to Madame Tussauds means we are the same size as Kylie Minogue) and the same overbearing grin that spreads across our face, it seems I have picked up more than one of her contagious traits.

But why today you may ask? Well the day started normally where I was still myself. I went shopping and bought fabric softener from a big supermarket chain. I then went to a different supermarket where I found the same product, but double the size and the same price as the original one.

Some of you may feel my outrage, but the rest of you probably would have got on with your lives. I however found my receipt of the product I had been ‘exploited’ by and returned to the shop demanding a refund, and then bought the bigger one in the other shop with my refund money. Exactly what my mother would have done. When I realised this, it worried me and I began thinking about all the other things I do that are the same as her:

  • I read recipe books for fun. Yes that’s right, not just to make a cake, I now enjoy coming up with new meal ideas!
  • I am capable of getting drunk off one glass of wine.
  • I put slippers on after a long day because my feet get cold quickly. I'm hoping this is something more hereditary than anything!
  • I make my bed every day, and enjoy display cushions
  • When I pack my bag I roll all my clothes up, to make more space and pad out all my valuables just in case I throw my bag down some stairs or something
  • I have exactly the same uncontrollable-belly-cackle laugh
  • I clean up after people non-stop and then moan about it
  • Nothing is worse than a dirty kitchen
  • When it’s cold out I almost cover my head in a scarf because I'm worried I’ll get ill
  • I own a diary. Honestly never thought I’d see the day!
  • I like candles. I won’t admit this to her though (she’s convinced I’ll set myself on fire) so I’ve replaced candles with an unreasonable fascination with fairy lights

Organising things is my favourite obsessive activity. I love being in charge and in control. An example of this is when we as a family go on holiday my Mum will not let anyone hold their own passport until we get to passport control. As soon as we get through, they are zipped back into the safety of Mum's travel wallet. When I go on holiday without her, I have a secret pleasure of having my own passport - and everyone else’s- safely in my own travel wallet! Ha!

I think my love of my camera and taking photos originally stems from her! When we were little, if we ever did anything funny she would say ‘where’s the camera?’ and then whip it out from the dresser draw to snap our funny moments. When they arrived in the post (in the old days of sending off the film) she would always write the date and what was happening on the back. I now enjoy doing this to my photos - just so I don’t forget! Although, Facebook does most of that for me!

Although these are little habits that are showing how much I idolise my Mum, they aren’t things I hate, they are things I enjoy.

So if you ever catch me hovering and you can tell I’m enjoying myself, feel free to laugh!

I like the person I’m becoming, even if it is a mini-me of my Mother (in the shape of Kylie).

Thanks to the digest for bringing this charming and amusing article to my attention. It was a pleasure to read! It's so scary how we're pretty much destined to end up like our parents! Oh well, que sera sera and all that jazz. Thanks for brightening up this drizzley day!

This is a brilliant article. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, although I have always looked like my dad, I am now starting to turn into my mother with looks and personality traits. I mean have you ever known anyone to go to London with £40 and come back with £25 of it left?

Got something to say?
