International Women's Day (IWD) is held every year on March 8th to raise awareness of the importance of equality for men and women, and to share the achievements of women.

Sadly, in some countries women are still treated as second-class citizens, and don't have the same rights to education, healthcare, jobs and democracy as men.

In the UK, we're thankfully much further ahead than that, but there's still some way to go to reduce the barriers faced by girls. For example, we know that far too few girls consider careers in “non-traditional” industries like engineering, construction, and the sciences, and many girls are channelled into stereotypical vocational training, such as hairdressing and beauty, for example. A career as a hairdresser or beautician is perfect for someone who has a passion to do just that, but we want to give girls a chance to explore their options and see what else is available to them.

On Friday 8th March 2013 we’re hosting a special event in Cardiff to support International Women’s Day and celebrate National Careers Week (March 4-8th). Keeping It Equal is an event just for Key Stage 3 and 4 girls (age 11-16) and will be held at the Cardiff City Stadium in Leckwith, Cardiff.

Keeping It Equal will mark the special day to celebrate women’s achievements with presentations from inspiring women speakers, and allow girls to try their hands at a whole host of exciting careers, sports and activities that are usually targeted towards boys. From panel beating to bricklaying to football – this event will allow girls to get involved, have some fun and broaden their career horizons. There will also be information stands from a range of organisations, freebies and giveaways, a Big Brother Diary Room for girls to share their views and an interactive role model race session, so girls can get up close and ask questions to a host of inspiring women from all walks of life.

Find out more about Keeping It Equal at www.myfulllcircle.org/news and follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay up-to-date. Places are just £20 per person, with one going free for each five booked. Places are limited though, so get in touch quickly to reserve yours at info@myfullcircle.org and make sure you’re Keeping It Equal for IWD!

If it's a day to "raise awareness of the importance of equality for men and women", shouldn't it be called International Equality Day?

Just a thought.
