July’s Reading Power Book Club is We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. Martin Chilton of The Telegraph calls it a ‘mysterious and addictive treat’, with a ‘dramatic and severe’ twist that just might blow your mind.

Still not convinced? Here’s the blurb:

A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.

We Were Liars is a sophisticated, modern suspense novel from New York Times best-selling author, National Book Award finalist, and Printz Award honoree, E. Lockhart.

Read it.

And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.

Are you not tingly? Yes, we admit—a wealthy family relaxing on an island hardly seems to be the stuff of 21st-century Young-Adult (YA) fiction (for one, it’s none of that dystopian-RME stuff). With grand themes of opulence, forbidden love and a poorer outsider who threatens the social order, We Were Liars sounds like Jane Austen meets Titanic. But its snarky humour, as well as its vivid, picturesque portrayal of Martha’s Vineyard affluence is endearing as heck.

King of YA fiction, John Green (The Fault In Our StarsMay 2013's Reading Power) definitely recommends it, calling it ‘thrilling, beautiful, and blisteringly smart, […] utterly unforgettable’. Even @sarahdessen thinks it’s ‘so freaking good’. Read it.

And if anyone asks you if you did read it, just LIE.
