Judy's Affordable Vintage Fair
Walking into the Great Hall of Cardiff University Students' Union, it's obvious that there will be plenty on offer today for vintage fans at Judy's Affordable Vintage Fair. The room is filled with stalls, crammed full of everything from bags to furs, and I can’t wait to jump right in and start rummaging through some of the treasures that cover the tables. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a girl looking for some cute accessories or a vintage pair of heels, or a guy looking for a leather satchel and a Barbour.
As I am walking around I spot one lovely thing in particular a customised bangle covered in little buttons and pieces of jewellery. I decided to talk to the two smiling faces behind the stall, Christine and Laura from Fennella:
So, tell me about where the inspiration for Fennella’s pieces comes from.
Well, we just sort of started playing around with discarded bits of jewellery and buttons, and that’s how we created the bags and bangles that are on the stall today. It’s all new stuff, but it has a charming chic vintage feel to it. We’ll probably change the look a bit again in a few months because of how quickly trends are changing now.
Has it been a good day here at the fair for you so far?
Yes, it’s early days yet, there’s a good few hours left, but I’m sure we’ll have a great day here.
As I continue to wonder around the stalls, I notice the Maggies Dress Vintage stall, covered in lovely silk scarves, handbags and dresses, and as the event’s name suggests, all at affordable prices. With a rummage basket full of scarves at only 3 each or 2 for 5 (which, in my experience, is very good value!) I talked to one of the girls running the stall, Kelly, to see what she thought about vintage fairs.
How many vintage fairs does Maggies Dress Vintage set up their stall at?
Well, we do a lot throughout the year, mainly at Blind Lemon Vintage events and student fairs like this one, but our main business comes from the website really.
What do you think about the growing popularity of vintage fairs like this one?
The whole vintage fashion scene has really grown in popularity and become more mainstream in the last two years. You used to just get petite girls wearing vintage, but now bigger girls are getting into it and wearing the clothes too, and because there’s more of a demand for the clothes, more are available. We’ve got something for every shape and size on our website.
Walking round the fair, it seemed that what Kelly said was very true, there were a lot of people there; girls and boys of every shape and size, and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. There seems to be an increasing number of vintage fairs popping up over the past few years, and a lot of them seem to be aimed at students too. From today’s turn out, it’s plain to see that vintage is definitely right on trend at the moment, and has made a triumphant move into the mainstream. So, get down to your nearest vintage fair soon and bag yourself a bargain!

Hi, thanks for the great comments. Not sure when the next Judy's Affordable Vintage Fair is, but there are a few vintage fairs going on in Cardiff over the next few weeks. Most events are posted up on this facebook page -

That's mainly how I keep up to date, but I think there's an email update thing on the Judy's Affordable Fair link in the article too.
