Here Be Dragons
The annual Cardiff MAS carnival will once again bring Cardiff alive with hundreds of flamboyant costumes, carnival creations, masks, headpieces, giant puppets on backpacks and mobile sculptures.
All of which dance and parade accompanied by music and people playing steel drums through the streets of Cardiff.
This year’s theme for the carnival is Here Be Dragons, a colourful parade of all things Welsh.
I took part in the Cardiff carnival two years ago and it was great fun. Over the three-week workshop I helped make the costumes and rehearsed the dance that we performed. People of all ages helped out, and it was a great way to meet new people. Some of the costumes that were being made were so big that they had five or six people working on them.
On the day of the carnival it poured down with rain but despite the weather many people turned out to watch as we danced through Cardiff Bay. We left rainbow-coloured paint trials behind from all the face and body paint that had run off us.
There were people from the news that came to film parts of the carnival and later that day we saw ourselves on the television. It was a brilliant experience and I’d definitely do it again.
