For Your Viewing Pleasure: Cult Cinema Club
I have not held back for my film club, which is every Wednesday. I handpicked some of my favourite films.
I found it hard to pick only six for the six weeks. I wracked my head over this for quite some time. This was after all, the only event ongoing for the whole time of the shop’s duration. So what exactly did I pick? Let me tell you:
- Little Shop Of Horrors
- Mulholland Drive
- Talk Radio
- Inland Empire
- The Rocky Horror Picture Show
This is admittedly a mixed bag. But that exactly what I wanted. The first and last weeks are framed with musicals, whilst the more "deep" films lay in the middle of the schedule. The first week did see a fair few people come and view. Since then the audience figures have been smaller, yet still very rewarding. I would after all prefer one person to truly understand a film than a whole shop full of people who do not.
Each of the films is given a little introduction by myself. Why have I chosen it? What do I love about it? Why should I inflict it upon young people? I felt the compulsion to speak before each film (heralded by a few strikes of my mini gong). We would after the end, discuss the films further, which pleased me greatly.
I had been approached and asked why wasn’t I showing films young people had heard of? Purely because they know of those films they speak of and the whole idea of this is sharing one they may not know (one of life’s most important things). I always appreciate recommendations off other people, so it works both ways, I guess. These films greatly affected me. Here’s hoping it will for someone else as well…
Please note that Inland Empire is today (Tuesday 3rd September 2013) and not tomorrow.
