EP Review: Them Dead Beats - Give Us A Minute
Them Dead Beats - Give Us A Minute
Them Dead Beats are Matt Taylor (vocals, guitar) and Rhys Gallivan (drums).
Yes, there are only two of them, but they make enough noise between them to bring down many houses.
Hailing from Barry, their debut EP is dropping on Thursday 18th June 2015 and the quintet of songs cram more fuzzed-up guitar and pulsating drums into its 14 minutes than most bands manage across a whole album.
Taylor's voice defies his age, and on Pop & Stop sounds as gravelly as a singer who has been screaming his way through a nightly set for the last few decades. Gallivan's drumming is energetic to say the least; if you've not had the fortune of seeing them live over the past couple of years, then his frenzied approach transfers to record well and gives you an idea of what you're missing.
There's a whole bunch of DIY garage rock bands treading the boards around south Wales at the moment, but none have the same whiskey-soaked, smokey sound that Them Dead Beats are mastering right now. Closer Call Them Sweet is the highlight of the set as it's the only song over three minutes, allowing you to get to grips with it before it ends. Recorded at Stomp Box Studios it may be, but it has the same blistering force that you'll feel when faced with them on a live stage.
Rating: 4/5
