Crime In Residence

WORDS: Holly North /

Even though it’s the first term for many of Glamorgan's Atrium and UWIC Cyncoed freshers, Ty Pont Haearn on Pellet Street has experienced their fair share of crime and deviance.

Although the halls of residence have 24-hour surveillance, muggings and theft have still occurred. In the third week of uni, a 19-year-old female was mugged right outside the halls.

Although she claims the staff were helpful with cancelling her cards and escorting her to her room, no apparent improvements have been made.

According to the hospitality manager, fire regulations stand in the way of hiring a security guard by the front doors as they would take up too much space in the lobby area.

As well as mugging, road sign theft and vomit, breakages have also been a problem within the 21-story halls of residence. However, kitchen inspections are currently being taken out and students will be fined £50 for any stolen items found in their flat. The final figure of fines will be a good indication on the level of deviance the halls contain.

The mugging incidences have been sparse, but it is still a serious crime. If that won’t improve the safety for our students, what will?

Anyone with any information on the mugging, or any such attacks on students in the city should contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
