Climate Champions 2009
WORDS: Tom Williams (Youth Editorial Group)
Do you have good ideas on how to tackle climate change in Wales?
The search is on for 2009’s Climate Change Champions. After a hugely successful year, the competition is open again ? and we’re looking for YOU. To enter the competition you must:
o Have good ideas about how to tackle climate change in Wales
o Be between 11-18-years-old
o Be able to encourage people to reduce their carbon footprint
This year, applicants are being asked to produce a creative piece of work. It could be a news report, a piece of art, an article, a short film, a website, creative writing or absolutely anything you can think of. It doesn’t have to be complicated! It needs to show your understanding of climate change and its impact in Wales and how you might encourage people to lower their carbon footprints.
The chosen semi-finalists will be invited to meet judges to discuss their ideas, then the winners will be selected (hopefully before Christmas) and then you will be officially unveiled at the start of 2009: the start of the most amazing and rewarding year ever! You will go on a Climate Change fact-finding expedition abroad somewhere (all free of cost! Feb. 16th ? 20th). There is also a prize to the school with the most enthusiasm in entering.
The difference about this article is that it comes from a current Climate Change Champion. If you want to know more about what events we’ve attended this year click here.
For reasons as to why brushing up your knowledge on climate change is so important, see my article on effects of climate change in Wales, here.
Advice
Be you. Be a person. Don’t try and be something you’re not. For people to listen to you as a climate champion, you need to be genuine. Don’t be afraid if you don’t know everything? few people do. Stay open minded, as I have done, on everything, and put your all into it. If climate change is something you believe in, then do something about it. Even if you don’t make it as a champion, you can still spread the word, educate and change yourself and others, make a positive difference. Let this competition be your platform to soar from, even if you don’t win it. Let this be your starting point to champion climate change. Don’t just wait for someone else to act. Act now? and there’s a greater chance they’ll act too.
