Charlotte Excels At DofE
As it is Volunteers' Week, we thought we would bring you some stories about some of the fabulous things that participants and volunteers are doing in their local areas.
Charlotte is an enthusiastic year 10 pupil who undertook her Bronze Duke Of Edinburgh (DofE) as soon as the group was set up at Treorchy Youth Centre.
She began volunteering straight away by creating a dog walking club in her local area of Cwmparc.
This was a group which was set up completely under Charlotte's own initiative and it has seen her take the dogs in the neighbourhood out for walks of varying length, depending on how often they were being walked by their owners and how much energy the dogs had!
As well as setting up this new group, Charlotte worked hard to take on completely new challenges for each section of her Bronze Award and for her physical and skills sections she joined new groups.
For the skills section, Charlotte enrolled herself onto a German language course in Cardiff and travelled there every week for six months to learn this very useful life skill. She is keen to share her newly learned knowledge of the German language and often gives her DofE Leaders and peers an update on how she is getting on.
Charlotte also joined a cycling club in her local area for her physical section and immersed herself in this brand new activity which she describes as getting fit and having fun at the same time!
The expedition training is currently taking place and Charlotte has learned lots about map reading, camp craft and first aid procedures from her DofE Leader, Sean. Both Charlotte and her team will undertake their assessed expedition in the summer holidays and we wish them all the best of luck with it!
