Saturday 4th September 2010 saw 40,000 people visit Coopers Field for the Cardiff, Wales’ Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Trans-gendered (LGBT) Mardi Gras festival.

It is a celebratory event for LGBT people and Loud & Proud (LGBT) youth provision took on the challenge of providing a Youth Zone.

The Youth Zone at the Mardi Gras was the first of its kind in the 11 years the festival has been running.

The Youth Zone was run in partnership with Loud & Proud, theSprout website, ProMo-Cymru, Meic, Public Health Team and Cardiff Women’s Aid. This was partnership working at its best, with funding by Cardiff Youth Service and Arts & Business. On the day there were many activities available such as circus skills, a DJ workshop, graffiti art, bracelet making, sexual health awareness and a video vox-pop. Throughout the day approximately 500 young people came into the Youth Zone to get involved.

Members of Loud & Proud also got involved with the running of the Youth Zone by helping with the making of bracelets and with bringing other young people into the area. During the day we were asked if the Youth Zone will be happening next year - which is definitely something that we’ll think about. If it does it will be even bigger and better.

Looks like a nice aside from the chaos of the Mardi Gras! Well done on the first youth zone, hope it's there again next year.
