This week I went to the Build-A-Bear Workshop in St. David’s Arcade.
Originally it was called The Bear Factory and I’m guessing many of you know or have heard of it. OK so I’m twenty-one-years-old yet I’ll admit I still love my cuddly toys, mainly sheep as I think they are cute, but that’s beside the point.
I went into the Build-A-Bear Workshop mainly just to have a look around and OK to see what kind of of cuddly toys they sell now and I was amazed. From what I remember they used to have mainly bears but also cats, dogs and other furry creatures, now they have almost anything a kid could want, owls, wolves, bears, dogs... you name it they probably have it.
I decided I wanted to get a dog, well it was more like thinking I wanted one and decided I’d come back nearer my birthday, but then my boyfriend noticed the look on my face and how I talked about the teddy and he said “Come on then”. After much discussion and confusion on my part he said it would be an early Valentine’s present because I’d been going on about getting another bear. So we were off to the factory again but this time I’d be leaving with a cuddly toy.
When you pick up the toy of your choice you don’t just go and buy it, oh no in this shop you go up to a machine and the staff ask you to put your foot on a peddle on the floor near the machine and wait while your toy is being stuffed. Then you have to pick up a heart or you can choose a noise so that when you press the bear you hear it, or you can make a personalised message. I opted for the heart. I was then told to kiss the heart and make a wish before putting it in the back of my new bear, then it was stitched up and ready to go.
But the story is not over yet, oh no, I then decided I wanted to buy some clothes for my little dog cuddly toy, oh and some shoes, so I picked out a nice little outfit (a shirt and tie with jeans) and then some shoes for its little feet (trainers). Then we had to use one of the computers to register the bear and get his birth certificate, fun times as it’s a little bit childish I know but I don’t care, so I had to put my details into the system then choose whether my toy was going to be a girl or boy, then give him or her a name.
I decided mine was going to be a boy and called him Patch because of his colouring, I even bought him a little toy mobile phone from the shop. I left with a big smile on my face and feeling like a five-year-old kid who just got to pick out her favourite sweets in a sweet shop. I do love my Patch so much I decided to write this article, I know it’s silly and quite funny but hey inside aren’t we all just big kids waiting for our teddy bears?
