Are Mobile Phones Dangerous?
Some people think that mobile phones are dangerous but are they really that bad?
Yes
Electromagnetic waves can damage tissue and they are let out by mobiles. Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) can damage the way your body cells work. People who have long mobile phone talks can complain of fatigue, headaches and lack of concentration. A study by the University of California reported a strong correlation between prolonged exposure to EMFs and an increased risk of leukaemia.
No
Electromagnetic waves from phones are not powerful enough to cause heat damage to the body. The electromagnetic fields are incredibly small, and so unlikely to affect cells in your body. If you do make long phone calls then don't worry as these complaints have never been proven in a laboratory.
Do:
- Only use the phone when necessary
- Keep the calls short
- Carry the phone away from your body
- Buy a phone with a long "talk time”. It lets out less powerful emissions
Don't:
- Buy a phone with an internal aerial, you want the aerial at the furthest possible distance from your head
- Use your phone if the reception is weak asthe phone needs more power to communicate with the base station, and so the electromagnetic wave emissions are higher
- Buy a phone with a high SAR value, this means that it emits more radiation
- Buy protective gadgets unless that they have been tested
