Announcing The Winner: Our 5000th Article Competition
On 13th October 2014, TheSprout reached a huge milestone: our 5000th article was published!
All these articles have been written by you, so we want to say a big THANK YOU. Do keep using us - in all the creative and inspired ways that you do - to get your message out there to all the wonderful young people of Cardiff. In the last few years, we’ve been completely inspired by the ingenious multitude of different ways you’ve all found to have your say through us. How do I mean?!
Well, this month alone, we’ve seen opinion articles spanning everything from “Why I have to do the New Theatre panto interviews” to the appointment of Leonardo DiCaprio as UN Messenger of Peace; we’ve shared campaigns on everything from eating less meat to save the planet (via Renew Wales), to travelling safely (via Welsh Government); and our young people have reported on everything from raves with Chase & Status in Splott Warehouse to (perhaps quieter) nights at the theatre, opera and cinema (or at least you’d hope). We’ve even shared new opportunities for young people on everything ranging from joining a family justice board to table tennis groups and a national poetry competition. We haven’t even mentioned our own online creative writing hub yet (don’t worry, we’ll spare you for now)…
When we reached about 4970 articles, we ran a competition: whoever submits our 5000th article will win not one, but two prizes! We had entries pour in, but we can now announce that article #5000, rather fittingly, went to our most prolific reviewer, Weeping Tudor (also known as James Ellis).
We are very grateful to our friends at Prezzybox.com for providing one of the prizes – a fantastic new Click Stick. A Click Stick is a selfie stick, as it were. These clever little devices allow you to take selfies from afar; they are extensions to your limbs onto which you can attach your phone or camera. These are all the rage right now. They are the perfect way to get the best angle or background and they solve that age-old (well, since the inception of selfies) problem: how do I take a group selfie (and get everyone in)?! Here’s a photo of me giving it to a rather surprised James Ellis! Sorry, it’s not a selfie – we missed a trick! The other prize was a rather fashionable (some might say “designer”) Sprout t-shirt – our latest release. If you want a chance to win one yourself, you can enter our rolling competition here.

If you’ve read all the information above and thought “How can I get involved?”, then do contact us - we’d be delighted to hear from you. I’ve given you a little taster of such ways below. If you want to just get on with submitting stuff straight away, then just head here.
Organisations - We’re always looking for more organisations that work with young people to share their campaigns, events, opportunities, advice and service info or to help our resident Agony Aunt (called Aunty Sprout… of course).
Young People - We have important website and content issues to discuss this Thurs in our monthly meet-up (see here), two big events to organise (organise here), a new monthly book club meet-up (read more here), free review tickets to most major upcoming events in Cardiff (request here) - now including Vue (learn morehere) – and we’d love to take on budding journalist / writing / photography volunteers who want to commit to us one or two days a week. Finally, we want to put together a short video to explain how people use theSprout and (hopefully) why they love it so. Please send in short clips saying your bit. If I haven’t convinced you to love theSprout by the end of this article, I give up!
Again, a big THANK YOU to everyone who has ever contributed to theSprout.
