An Inspector Calls
The main characters in this book?and play are:
Arthur Birling
Sybil Birling (his wife)
Sheila Birling (his daughter)
Eric Birling (his son)
Edna (the maid)
Gerald Croft (Sheila's fianc?)
Inspector Goole?
"Two hours ago a young woman died in the infirmary... Well, Eva Smith's gone... You can't do her any more harm... You can’t even say, 'I'm sorry, Eva Smith.'"
This story takes place in 1912 when Arthur Birling is a successful manufacturer. The family has just finished dinner and are celebrating Gerald and Sheila's engagement.
During the meal the festivities are stopped because a mysterious man named Inspector Goole is about to break up the party with some shocking News. A young working-class woman has committed suicide.
With the Inspector questioning each member of the family, everyone including Gerald is linked to the woman's death.
This story is written in play format and uses old-fashioned speech. The only criticism I have against this book is the fact that it can be quite slow, but when you get the part when the secrets come out the story is very good.
Overall I think it has an imaginative storyline and is a very fascinating. I love the twists and turns in this book; you never know what secret may come out next.?
Buy the book here. See the play at the New Theatre from Tuesday 19 - Saturday 23 May.?
