Yn Gymraeg // Welsh version

I've never really written an article on drugs before.

I'd like to start off by saying that I'm no expert on drugs, this is just what I've seen first hand. I have no say in whether you do or don't take drugs but I just wanted to share this story with you.

I had repressed this until recently: I read an article on Vice about synthetic cannabis and the effects it's had on some people in America.

The article talks about how this 27-year-old schizophrenic stopped taking his meds and started smoking this stuff known as 'Spice' at the time and basically lost it and walked down the streets of Florida waving an axe about and threatening people. He was shot dead by police later that night.

That was enough to shake me up but as I read more, I found out that this stuff had led to intense hallucinations, palpitations, inability to speak, vomiting, psychotic episodes, near death experiences, paranoia, agitation, tremors, overheating and heart attacks.

This was starting to sound more and more familiar as I read on and then I read a quote from one of the sources who contributed to the article:

"It's nothing like marijuana," he said. "If you're lucky, it gets you super ****ing high. If not. You might end up spasming on the floor of a hospital, or chasing your neighbours down the street with sharp objects."

After reading that, I had to stop reading for a while. I felt sick because this is the memory that came back up.

This was back in the summer, me and my friend were at this party. It was starting to wind down around about five in the morning. Everyone was either asleep or cuddled up and dozing off. My friend and I, however, were still wide awake and we found a little bag of what we thought was just weed on the table. Assuming that the guy who owned it was probably asleep and seeing as we were already out of it, young and very freaking stupid, we decided to smoke it and then chuck him a fiver in the morning for it.

I didn't get to have any before my friend emptied the few grams of this stuff into a single bong hit and took it all in. I grumbled at him because he hogged it all but after what happened next, I'm kinda glad I stayed clear of it.

I started to get hungry so we decided to go trek to the KFC a few miles away but before we left, my friend started to spin out a little. I told him to sit down and calm down a minute so we could go. That's when he started to heave, this wasn't the first time he'd done this and I'm sure it won't be the last either. I told him that the bathroom was right in front of him, just walk over and go be sick, so we can go.

He stood up and the whole room started to spin around him. He panicked so he decided to leg it to the bathroom but being completely out of it, he accidentally tackled a chair on the way and faceplanted the floor. He hit the floor so hard his entire body bounced off the floor and he vomited everywhere mid-flight, landing face first in it.

Sounds funny, doesn't it? I know I laughed when I saw it. That was until he started fitting, screaming and flailing around in his own sick for 4 long hours.

I didn't know what to do. Everyone tried to calm me down and say he was just having a bad trip. I've never felt so unbelievably helpless in my entire life; there was nothing I could do. I couldn't even get near him without wanting to be sick myself.

What he smoked wasn't just some normal weed, it was the same chemical cannabis that guy had lost his mind and died on. It wasn't called Spice though, it was called Exodus, it's also been called Annihilation, K-2, Pandora's Box, Atomic Bomb, Ultra Haze and Toxic Waste. It only takes 1 gram of this stuff to get you completely gone and he took about 3 grams of it that night. I don't think it's hard to imagine the state he was in.

I was out of it myself that day so I did nothing, hoping that everything would just be fine.

I had to sit there for four freaking long hours and watch my best friend almost die. When he came to, he told me that in his trip he was trying to rewind time and he had to watch himself die over and over. He told me that he could hear me talking and that's what brought him back down to earth and I swear to you I've never cried so much in my life.

I lost a part of him that night. He hasn't been the same since that night and to be honest I don't think I have been either. But in a way, I'm kind of glad it happened. He and I both were heading down a path I really never want to follow again.

It was the wake up call we both needed and I hope it's the one some people reading this need too. We were lucky that night, I could have lost him for good. I don't want to ever take that chance again and I never want to have to hear that someone else has had to too.

Wow! You always hear about things like this in the news but you never really think it will happen to people you know. It's great that you guys have learned a lesson from this, many people would just carry on and find the experience amusing. It's a shame you had to learn the hard way but sharing stories like this is important and may just help someone else think twice too. Thanks for sharing this!
