Motorbikes, Mopeds and Scooters

You can ride a moped or scooter at 16 years of age in the UK and a motorbike at 19 years of age with certain power limitations.

If you want to drive a motorbike, moped or scooter you will need to get a license and pass a basic proficiency test before you can ride. For details about all of the requirements and tests necessary please go to Gov.uk

  • Driving a motorbike, moped or scooter can be dangerous as you have less protection around you than if you were in a car. Ensure you always wear a helmet and protective clothes in case you have an accident
  • Be wary of other road users. Motorbikes, mopeds and scooters are smaller than cars so it can be difficult for cars to see you in their mirrors
  • Drive at a sensible speed to avoid accidents. The faster you go, the less control of the vehicle you have, so don't take any risks
  • Even if you can drive a car, you should be aware of the difference of driving a scooter or motorbike. You will not have the protection of a car, and for its size, a motorbike is much more powerful than a car

Driving abroad

  • The condition of the roads in foreign countries can vary, so if travelling abroad, be prepared
  • It's fairly easy to hire a scooter when you are on holiday, and it is a popular way for young people to get around. If you have a car license and are over 18 you should be able to rent one
  • Driving a motorbike on holiday can be a great way of seeing the countryside
  • If you have never driven a scooter before and you decide to hire one while on holiday, you should practise before you go on large or busy roads, so you feel confident driving
