Cycling is a convenient and cheap way to get around and a great way to explore your surroundings.

Cycling can give you a lot of freedom - but it's important that you're prepared for all weather and surface conditions. Stay safe and wear a cycle helmet.

Cycling can be enjoyed alone, or you can team up with others and cycle together with a cycle club. There are lots of cycle routes in Wales for you to try out.

Cycling at night

  • If you are cycling at night, the law states you must attach at least two lights to your bike - a white one at the front and a red one at the back
  • Your bike must also have a red reflector at the back
  • Make sure you stay visible - wear reflective clothing so that other vehicles and pedestrians can see you

Cycling in wet weather

  • Cycling in wet weather can be dangerous, as the rain reduces how much you can see and there is a risk your tyres can skid
  • It will take you longer to slow down when the surface is wet - so brake early and slowly
  • Wear waterproof clothing to keep you dry and warm
  • Check your brakes, gears and tyres to see if they are working properly

Cycling in hot weather

  • Make sure you drink plenty of fluids in hot weather to stop you becoming dehydrated
  • Protect your skin from the sun by wearing sun cream on your face and neck

Cycling proficiency

If you have not learned to ride a bike or you don't feel confident about cycling on the road, you can do a cycling proficiency course with the National Cyclist Network: CTC Cymru.

Looking after your bike

  • It's a good idea to buy a bike lock to keep your bike safe - speak to someone in your local cycling shop for advice
  • Keep your bike in good condition by making sure it's well oiled, the tyres are well inflated and the brakes and gears are working properly
