  • Human rights are basic entitlements that everyone should be able to enjoy. Important areas of human rights are:

    • Freedom and equality for everyone

    • The right to work and have a family life

    • To be able to live without fear and to be safe

    • To have access to justice and a fair trial in a court

    • To have government representation and education

    • To be able to think and express yourself freely

Human rights around the world

  • In some countries, people have very few human rights and live in fear of torture and violence every day

  • This can occur when a country is at war when basic human rights are often abused. As well as physical violence, this may affect people's right to make a living, for instance when the crops or animals they farm are destroyed

  • If a government is corrupt, human rights violations often occur. People may be too frightened to speak their minds, because of the threat of violence if they criticise the government

  • Some countries have a very poor record when it comes to human rights. People may be tortured or kept in prison without having a fair trial

Human rights in Wales and Britain

  • Because basic human rights are established in Wales and the UK, there are different issues that affect people's human rights in this country. The Human Rights Act protects people's basic rights to a free life

  • This act is often used to protect people who are not able to speak out for themselves, such as the elderly or people with disabilities, or people without much money, such as homeless people. Everybody is entitled to live a life with dignity

  • The rights of immigrants living in Britain are often debated. People seek asylum or safety in this country from dangers in their own countries. Some people think their right to live a life without threat of violence means they should be able to stay in this country
