somewhereto_re:store - High Street Heist Campaign Launch

This summer Cardiff is joining London, Manchester, Newcastle, Bangor (NI) and Glasgow to host a new and exciting campaign called somewhereto_re:store! which is all about young creative entrepreneurs having a chance to take over an empty space on the high street to do the things they love.

On Thursday, August 1st our Store opens officially – with a big launch event, introducing you to some tasters of what will be happening here over the next six weeks, involving live music, talks (just a bit, no worries), first exhibition opening and loads more.

Four exciting young acts will be performing for you on the day. Opening the launch live music set will be young up-and-coming musician Kizzy Crawford - a 17-year-old bilingual singer-songwriter ‘drawing inspiration from her Welsh/Barbadian heritage and seeking to blow away any preconceptions people have about Welsh Language music with assured writing and a spectacular voice’.

Joining her will be Sykes - a young musician who has supported Mary J Blige and Jay Z! Another young talent performing on the day will be Jamie, aka Too Young - a 19-year-old rapper, who’s already performed at the O2 Academy in Birmingham. Also our stage will welcome a young singer-songwriter Maddie Jones introducing her melodic mix of jazz, rock and folk combined with beautiful soft vocals.

Starting the series of exhibitions held in the space will be a cut off from a year-long photo project by Polly Homjakina, a young photographer from Belarus, who dedicated 11 months of her stay Cardiff to documenting local live music scene. This exhibition is like a final report of what I've seen throughout this year in Cardiff, sort of my tribute to the city's live music - the places, the people, the atmosphere itself - says Polly.

As a part of the exhibition line, we are bringing Photo Drying-Out to you, an exciting experience, well-loved all across the world.  A free space for showcasing/swapping your art/photography: just bring your piece and clip it to the rope with a peg ‘to dry’ while looking through – or even collecting – others’ photo laundry.  By the end of six weeks’ term a final exhibition will be held showcasing the parti-coloured results of this exciting art interaction.

We’re also happy to announce that our ambassador for this summer’s Cardiff campaign will be Gary Ryland, aka Ragsy, a self-taught singer-songwriter from Aberdare, who has recently on The Voice. Being a chef for last five years and dreaming of swapping the kitchen to festivals, Ragsy will tell young people his story of following a dream.

Bethan Elfyn, successful BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio Wales DJ and TV presenter, will make her appearance to say a couple of words on the campaign launch.

Parkour Wales will also be wowing the crowds outside the shop.

***

Don’t miss your chance to get involved in this exciting campaign: showcase your talent, boost your CV, gain first-hand experience, meet new people - or just come along and bring your friends to help create the atmosphere which this space deserves!

If you’re 16-25 and eager to become a part of it - no matter if you’re an artist or musician, eager to volunteer (an opportunity of completing Welsh Bacc community hours + £15 daily expenses), or just want to donate a spare chair - come on and bring it to the table! YOUR High Street needs YOU!
