Conducted and narrated by Valery Gergiev Peter and the Wolf is a perennial favourite and has to be one of the best pieces of music to take a child to listen to if you want to introduce them to the joy of classical music. Written by Prokofiev to help children identify the different orchestral instruments, you can picture Peter – represented by the strings – happily playing in the meadow where he’s not supposed to be. A bird (flute) sings in a tree; a duck (oboe) swims in the pond; then a cat (clarinet) appears, sending the bird flying to a higher branch. Peter’s grandfather (bassoon) warns him not to go outside, as a wolf (French horns) terrorises the creatures in the meadow leading to a thrilling ending. Performed alongside Tchaikovsky’s Suite from The Nutcracker, this double bill of enchanting performances is a perfect way for the whole family to experience the superb Mariinsky Orchestra.
